From the Tate: The artist has explained that 'Pech de Murat' is the name of the large hill in the centre of the painting, 'Pech' meaning peak. The view is almost identical to that in the watercolour 'Quercy Blanc', 1975–7 (T02111), and is taken from the top of the hills near the artist's home in this area near Cahors in the Lot, which has been the principal subject of his landscapes for some twenty years. He wrote (18 October 1980) that, as with the water-colour, 'here also I attempt to make the picture glow from within with the light, its own light absorbed from outside.'
